Robert Eggers’ Werwulf wraps filming, including Dartmoor location

The Director’s upcoming horror project starring Aaron-Taylor Johnson was filmed in Devon, Gloucestershire, Surrey, across Wales, and Elstree Studios.

Filming has now wrapped on Robert Eggers’ Werwulf film and now moves into post-production ready for the film’s release on December 25th 2026.

The film stars Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, Ralph Ineson and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.  Set in 13th-century England, Werwulf sees a remote village terrorised by a blood-thirsty, mythical creature.

The Director is known for his movies Nosferatu and The Lighthouse, which also starred Dafoe.  Robert Eggers said at a recent Q&A that Werwulf “is the darkest thing I have ever written, by far.”

As is customary with some of Eggers’ films, Werwulf will reportedly feature ‘old English’, or period-authentic dialogue.

Where was Werwulf filmed?

With production taking place at multiple sites across the UK, one of the key locations used in filming was Dartmoor in Devon where two sets were built between Widecombe and Postbridge, near Sharp Tor.  The sites were viewable by Dartmoor walkers and residents but closed off during construction and the filming.  The sets included medieval-style buildings and farssteads.

Location manager Alex Gladstone thanked authorities in Dartmoor and Devon for allowing them to film there and said he only wanted to leave “positive public relations” and that he would be happy to work with the national park to look at more filming opportunities in the future.

The filming also brought a number of other benefits to the area, thanks to cast and crew utilising local accommodation, restaurants and other facilities.

Werwulf is due for release on December 25 2026 in the USA and January 1 2027 in the UK.
