New Willem Dafoe film Werwulf to shoot on Dartmoor this autumn

Dartmoor

The new film also stars Lily-Rose Depp and Aaron Taylor-Johnson and will film on Dartmoor for around 11 weeks.

Dartmoor is no stranger to being cast as the backdrop for films and productions from around the world and now the internationally-famous Devon location is to feature in Robert Egger’s new film Werwulf, which is set in 13th-centuary England.

The Dartmoor National Park Authority’s development management committee were involved in granting permission for the production, which will also include the construction of two temporary movie sets to be created near Widecombe in the Moor and Postbridge.  The sets include medieval-style buildings and farmsteads.

As you’d expect for a film with a title like Werwulf, some of the filming across Dartmoor will be taking place after dark.

Planning officers said there was no planned disturbance of the land but there would be a watching brief by archaeologists and Mirage Pictures Ltd will be required to return the land to its former condition within six months.

With the crew filming for 11 weeks in the area, it is expected to also help boost the local economy via accommodation, restaurant bookings and local transport services.

Location manager Alex Gladstone expressed thanks to authorities in Dartmoor and Devon for allowing them to film there and said he only wanted to leave “positive public relations”.

Filming is also taking place at Elstree Studios, Hertfordshire and in Bourne Wood, Surrey.

Robert Eggers is also known for his movies Nosferatu and The Lighthouse.  Nosferatu was nominated for four Oscars in 2025.

A release date for Werwulf is still to be confirmed, but is expected to release in the United States in December 2026.

Dartmoor has recently been used for a new production of Jane Austen’s Sense & Sensibility and was a key location for Steven Spielberg’s War Horse as well as parts of the Harry Potter film series.
