Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp and Willem Dafoe star in what may be the director’s darkest film yet.
The first official image from Robert Eggers’ upcoming gothic horror film Werwulf has been released, giving audiences their initial glimpse of the director’s latest nightmare. The image from Focus Features, leans into the moody, atmospheric dread fans have come to expect from the filmmaker – though it offers no hint yet of the titular creature itself.
Directed by Robert Eggers – the filmmaker behind The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and 2024’s Nosferatu – Werwulf was also co-written by Eggers. Set in 13th-century England, Eggers has called it “the darkest thing I’ve ever written. By far.”
The cast is led by Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the role of the cursed farmer at the centre of the story, alongside Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, Ralph Ineson and Bodhi Rae Breathnach.
Taylor-Johnson, Depp and Dafoe previously worked with Eggers on Nosferatu, making this something of a reunion for the director and the ensemble.
Some of Werwulf was shot here in Devon on Dartmoor, where production built temporary medieval-style sets for shooting near Widecombe-in-the-Moor and Postbridge to capture the moor’s wild, atmospheric terrain.
Filming also took place at Sky Studios Elstree in Hertfordshire, at Bourne Wood in Surrey, in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, and in Wales.

Werwulf is in US cinemas on Christmas Day 2026 and in the UK on January 1 2027.
