‘Unmoored’ is a gritty, psychological thriller filmed largely on Exmoor and arrives in UK cinemas this month.

The film was adapted from the novel ‘The Living and the Dead in Winsford’ written by award-winning Swedish crime author Hakan Nesser while he spent several months living in Exmoor National Park.

Directed by Swedish award-winning director Caroline Ingvarsson, the film tells the story of Maria – a successful Swedish TV presenter whose life is turned upside down by shocking accusations made against her husband.

To avoid media attention, they head south on sabbatical, but an unexpected confrontation triggers a desperate chain of events, leading Maria to head to the solitude of the English moors (hence Exmoor’s starring role), but “her new idyll soon turns to paranoia. As her guilt grows, she is forced to examine the depths of her own self-deception in this psychological suspense drama.”

Whilst local filming can create an exciting buzz in the area, it also brings with it jobs, extra tourism and showcases Exmoor to new audiences around the world.

Unmoored has already been released in Sweden, but finally arrives on UK shores this month, before also heading to Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime on September 15th 2025.

Those familiar with Exmoor will likely spot plenty of familiar locations on screen, including the Exmoor Forest Inn.
