Saunton Sands named as one of UK’s Most Beautiful Beach Film Locations

Saunton Sands beach in North Devon

The famous North Devon beach was named alongside beaches in Dorset, Cornwall and Pembrokeshire.

Devon visitors and residents will be familiar with the long-stretching, picturesque Saunton Sands beach which is located on the North Devon coast, not far from the town of Barnstaple.  A new guide from location resource 4Filming has highlighted Saunton as one of the ‘most beautiful UK beaches used as filming locations’ in their latest location guide.

The UK has a wildly diverse coastline which lends itself well to the different requirements of productions looking for a particular setting or style – with wide golden stretches of sand to dramatic cliffs and rocks available for filmmakers.  Down in South Devon, Salcombe even doubled as a California coastal town (The Roses, starring Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch).

Saunton Sands has featured in numerous productions over the years, from Pink Floyd, Robbie Williams and Olly Murs music videos to Tom Cruise’s Edge of Tomorrow and DC Studio’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.  The huge expanse of long, golden sandy beach and rolling dunes provide a unique and accessible backdrop for coastal filming.

Saunton served as the backdrop to beach scenes in DC’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

The Devon filming destination is in good company too, with the UK locations list also featuring Durdle Door in Dorset (used in 2023’s Wonka), Kynance Cove in Cornwall (used for HBO’s Game of Thrones spin-off; House of the Dragon) and Freshwater West, Pembrokeshire (featured in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows).
